Mirwaiz kick-starts anti-drug campaign from Shaher-e-Khaas

Srinagar, Apr 13: Kashmir’s head priest and Chairman Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema(MMU) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Sunday kick-started anti-drug campaign from Kathidarwaza locality of old City amid active support of locals and Masjid Imams.
People from various walks of life including members from Sikh community, and youth extended full support to Mirwaiz to “eradicate social evils, especially growing drug abuse.” The locals raised slogans against the drug abuse soon after the head priest arrived in Kathidarwaza locality.
Mirwaiz, along with the locals visited Badamwari for an on-the-spot inspection of the reports of drug abuse from there. “It was an overwhelming support from locals, Masjid Imams and also from the youth... Kathidarwaza is known as the hub of drug abuse. Drug peddlers reach the area in the evening and start supplying kinds of drugs like Codeine, Corex, Alprex tablets, etc to youth. So we started our anti-drug campaign from here,” he said.
“Imams of atleast 12 Masjids extended full support to us. We also got support from the NGOs and a good number of local youth besides elders,” he said. “We marched towards Badamwari Garden to check the veracity of reports that youth were taking drugs inside the park. We appreciated the steps taken by the local Mohalla committees there that they don’t allow couples in the park. Only families are allowed, which is a good sign.”
He said the members of Sikh community living in the area also
“According to the experts, it takes at least 40-days to treat an addict. We urge the parents of the youth who have fallen prey to drug abuse to deal normally with their children and to take them to nearby drug de-addiction centers for treatment,” Mirwaiz, who also heads a Hurriyat faction said.
He said MMU will get in touch with various pharmaceutical companies to ensure that drugs like Corex, Codeine and Aplrex aren’t sold without medical prescription. “A good thing is that society has started waking up to end the drug abuse which is eating up our future generations,” he said.
At a MMU meeting at Mirwaiz Manzil, Rajouri Kadal, Mirwaiz recently announced to start anti-drug abuse campaign. Referring to a study by the United Nations International Drug Control Program (UNIDCP), Mirwaiz stated that 70000 youth are drug addicts in Kashmir of which 4000 are women.
Mirwaiz said the drive against drug-abuse is a long-drawn battle. “Our next program will be at Malkha, which is also known as a safe haven for drug peddlers,” he said.

And those, who have become addicts, need to be taken to drug de-addiction centers for treatment,” Mirwaiz said. He said many NGOs also extended a helping hand to eradicate the drug abuse.
